Prenzlauer Berg, Germany

Once the hipster area, Prenzlauer Berg has passed the torch the uber-trendy title to Mitte district. The glitterati have moved east, and Prenzl’berg has become baby central. The area still has more cool pubs, shops, and eateries than most other Berlin realms, and holds a special place in history for its lightning transformation from punk holdout to hip GDR art center to yuppified playground.

Post-reunification of Germany, Prenzlauer Berg was one of the first parts of East Berlin to be discovered and colonized by West Germans. Decrepit buildings were bought by developers at rock-bottom prices, restoration projects were subsidized by the city. This sense of resurrection made Prenzlauer Berg popular among students, artists, and free-spirits from the West.
